History
The Department of Chemistry at Marmara University was founded in July 1987 in Fındıkzade, Istanbul, within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It admitted its first students in the 1988–1989 academic year. Prof. Dr. Adnan AYDIN served as the founding Chair of the Department. In 1991, the Department moved from Fındıkzade to its present location on the Göztepe Campus.
INSTITUTIONAL RESTRUCTURING IN 2022
Under Presidential Decision No. 5868, published in the Official Gazette dated 26 July 2022 and numbered 31904, Marmara University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences was closed, and the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were established. Following this restructuring, the Department of Chemistry has continued its educational and scientific research activities within the Faculty of Science.
Program Overview
The Department of Chemistry offers contemporary education in chemistry as well as opportunities for academic research and interdisciplinary study. Its academic staff members take part in national and international research projects and publish their findings in respected scientific journals.
The language of instruction in the undergraduate program is 30% English. Students who do not pass the proficiency examination administered by the School of Foreign Languages during registration attend the compulsory English preparatory program. Students begin the undergraduate Chemistry Program after successfully completing the preparatory program.
Students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher may apply for double-major or minor programs, subject to the applicable regulations, academic requirements, and available quotas, and may earn a second diploma or a certificate. Students may also benefit from Erasmus+ and other international exchange opportunities.

Research Areas and Infrastructure
Research is conducted in a broad range of fields, including analytical chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, phthalocyanines, natural products, polymer chemistry, nanocomposites, enzyme immobilization, biopolymers, drug delivery, protein chemistry, computational chemistry, QSAR, environmental chemistry, electrochemistry, fuel cells, metal complexes, coordination chemistry, solid-state reactions, adsorption, sensors, and hydrogels.
Student and research laboratories are equipped with MALDI-TOF, GC-MS, ATR-FTIR, TGA, DSC, a photocalorimeter, a universal mechanical testing instrument, GPC, atomic absorption instrumentation, a UV spectrophotometer, a fluorometer, calorimetric equipment, a voltmeter, a potentiostat, an LOI instrument, a contact-angle instrument, and computer laboratory infrastructure for computational chemistry.
